What is Coluracetam?

Coluracetam is a synthetic compound that belongs to the racetam group. Like many other racetams it is a derivative of the original racetam, but it is 10-20 times more potent. Coluracetam is set to become the next big thing in the world of nootropics in the near future. Coluracetam was developed in Japan with the first intellectual ownership registered by Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharmaceutical Corporation back in 2005. The patent was later re-assigned to BrainCells Inc. This company took over the testing of Coluracetam.

Coluracetam and its effects have attracted a lot of attention from the medical community. It increases choline uptake as it regulates the rate-limiting process whereby choline is taken into a neuron in order to be converted into the acetylcholine neurotransmitter. Consequently, there is an increase in the synthesis, release and availability of acetylcholine, which is important for optimal functioning of memory, learning and focus. Increased levels of acetylcholine post Coluracetam ingestion are even observed in neurons that have been damaged.

By increasing the speed of choline uptake the activity of cholinergic neurons is improved. Studies show that Coluracetam specifically targets memory-related mechanisms. Thus, it may have long-term benefits in individuals with memory impairments. Positive results have also been demonstrated in treating general anxiety issues.

It is called Coluracetam as it has been shown to affect areas of the brain responsible for visual processing making colours brighter and shapes easier to distinguish. It may even have a potential to improve eyesight. Therefore, it is likely that in the future we might see more physicians prescribing Coluracetam as a way to treat retinal and optic nerve injuries.

Overall, thousands of people around the world have already tried Coluracetam and reported positive results.

Key benefits:

  • Better memory
  • Improved focus & attention
  • Enhanced productivity
  • Faster learning
  • Supported neurological functions

Long-term effects of Coluracetam:

Possibly the most significant benefits of Coluracetam are related to the long-term memory improvements for patients who suffer from a cognitive decline. At this point, research on humans is still very scarce; therefore most evidence on the effects of Coluracetam comes from animal studies. For example, rats subjected to the common maze test, showed memory improvements following a Coluracetam administration. Interestingly, the effects seemed to have remained in rats, despite the product no longer being present in their bodies. This has triggered assumptions on its long-term effect on memory.

Additionally, the results of 2010 Phase 2A trials indicated that Coluracetam may be very effective in treating the Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and general anxiety disorder. Patients who had found other anti-depressant medication ineffective in the past, were reporting positive changes with Coluracetam. More than a third (36%) of the tested patients scored much higher in a depression level assessment test. Users also claim Coluracetam dramatically reduces stress and helps develop a state of deep peace and serenity.

Recommended dosage:

Coluracetam is a relatively new substance and a lot of research still needs to be done. The recommended daily dosage is between 200 - 240 mg taken in 3 equal administrations. Obviously, the dosage is primarily determined by the user’s needs and goals for taking this nootropic. For instance, patients suffering from the major depressive disorder found that 100 mg doses of Coluracetam taken three times a day were effective at treating their symptoms. The same dosage is believed to be effective for anxiety sufferers too.

Experienced racetam users may find 200 mg of Coluracetam a day perfectly acceptable. However, as little as 20 mg/day can be enough for those who are just starting to take nootropics. As you become familiar with Coluracetam and its effects, the dosage can be gradually increased.

Coluracetam works synergistically with other racetams, strengthening their effects. Memory improvements, better decision making and even enhanced vision are felt when stacked with nootropics from the racetam family. Biological half-life of Coluracetam is around 3 hours.

Mechanisms of action:

Coluracetam primarily functions as a choline uptake enhancer. It helps the brain and the rest of the body develop higher levels of choline and use it more efficiently. This is very important in order for the brain to synthesise acetylcholine neurotransmitter. Acetylcholine is involved in different cognitive processes, such as memory formation and learning capacity. Another method of action of Coluracetam is the synthesis of glutamate by stimulating the brain’s AMPA receptors. Glutamate is possibly the most important neurotransmitter for synaptic plasticity. Effectively, Coluracetam enables your neurons to make new connections and store new memories easier.

Coluracetam side effects:

Again, because Coluracetam is such a recent addition to the nootropic world, the full information on its side effects is not available. Studies carried out by BrainCells Inc indicated no negative side effects, at 80 mg taken three times a day dosage. This suggests that Coluracetam has little or no toxicity.

However, based on information about other racetams, one can experience headaches as the side effect. A decent choline source, such as Alpha GPC, CDP Choline or Centrophenoxine will definitely help with this issue.
