What is Rhodiola rosea?

Rhodiola rosea (aka “golden root” or “Arctic root”) is an herb widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).6 Rhodiola rosea is used to alleviate depression, stress, anxiety and reduce fatigue.2 Rhodiola rosea is known as a stimulant of the nervous system that can enhance work performance.6

A number of scientific studies have demonstrated Rhodiola rosea’s positive effects.1-6 For example, a systematic review published in 2011shown that Rhodiola rosea may have beneficial effects on mental performance and certain mental health conditions.1 In addition, a study on the effects of Rhodiola rosea on stress related symptoms found that 400 mg of Rhodiola rosea per day (taken in the morning and before lunch) used for 14 days had positive effects in mildly anxious participants.2 The same study demonstrated that following the use of Rhodiola rosea participants had a significant reduction in self-reported measures of anxiety, stress, anger and confusion and showed a significant improvement in total mood.2 Another study supported these findings and reported that Rhodiola rosea has neuroprotective, cardioprotective, anti-fatigue, anti-depressive, anxiolytic and nootropic effects.3

In summary, Rhodiola rosea is believed to promote physical and cognitive vitality.4 Conditions that have been suggested to benefit from Rhodiola rosea supplementation include depression, fatigue, headaches, hypertension, insomnia, colds and flus, schizophrenia and sexual dysfunction (males).6

Mechanisms of action:

In a large study of healthy participants, the combined effect of Rhodiola rosea and another herbal supplement Ginkgo biloba has been shown to result in a more significant effect on cognitive function when compared to either of these herbs used individually.5 Therefore, for extra benefits you may consider taking Rhodiola rosea and Ginkgo biloba together.

Side effects:

Generally,Rhodiola rosea is a safe and well-tolerated herb nootropic. However, some of its components might act as a blood thinner. Therefore, you should not use Rhodiola rosea with any blood thinning medications. If the recommended daily dosage (see above) is exceeded you may experience irritability, nausea, restlessness, agitation and have difficulty falling asleep.
