Phosphatidylserine (PS) is an amino acid derivative which is highly prevalent in human cells as it is a major component of the cell membrane. In other words, it is a building block nutrient for healthy, alive and fully functional brain cells. There are two major functions of PS in the brain. Firstly, it revitalises brain cell membranes and secondly, it regulates the release of neurotransmitters. PS has been shown to improve a number of brain functions that tend to decline with age. This may be explained by the fact that natural production of PS decreases during mid-life.
For example, PS has a positive effect on memory, mood and cognition in older individuals. Therefore, it may be very effective in reducing the risk of dementia, cognitive dysfunction and decline in mental function. By strengthening cell membranes, PS is also able to improve memory, increase attention span and enhance mood during mental stress. Interestingly, PS may have an ergogenic effect in athletes by increasing recovery, preventing muscle soreness and reducing cortisol (‘stress hormone’) concentrations in response to training.
PS is efficiently absorbed after oral consumption. PS is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier. Once in the brain, PS binds to neurotransmitters and helps to metabolise glucose more efficiently. This increases cell excitability and communication. PS is a fat-soluble phospholipid.
The recommended daily dosage is between 300 - 600 mg. Phosphatidylserine is derived from soy lecithin.
PS is generally regarded as safe when used at recommended dosages. Side effects are rare but mild gastrointestinal distress may occur.
